Walkthrough · Chapter 2 of 6 · Self-contained

Snowcraft & Dreadnought

Josef, the frozen north, the fire of Kashuan, and a boarding action against the Empire’s flying weapon of war.

Chapter goals

Chapter 2 checklist

  • Travel to Salamand; recruit Josef
  • Obtain Snowcraft; cross snowfields
  • Resolve Bafsk / Empire engineering plot as directed
  • Kashuan Keep: retrieve Sunfire (or Egil’s Torch path to Sunfire)
  • Board and sabotage the Dreadnought
  • Strip Josef’s gear before the snow cave collapse sequence
  • Airship / Deist (Ch.3)
Town

Salamand

  1. From Altair, push north toward the snowy town of Salamand (party may include Minwu still depending on story beat — follow who Hilda assigns).
  2. Talk to all NPCs. Learn about kidnapped villagers / Empire force using the area.
  3. Meet Josef, local fighter who joins to save his daughter / people (quest-linked). Equip him with fists or a weapon you will actually use on him.
  4. Memorize new keywords from Salamand dialogue; Ask them in Altair if needed for next flags.
Traversal

Snowcraft & northern missions

  1. Obtain the Snowcraft (sled) via Josef’s questline — usually after a cave rescue / item retrieval near Salamand.
  2. Use Snowcraft on deep snow tiles the party cannot walk.
  3. Clear the assigned northern dungeon (Semitt-adjacent or snow cave as marked): free prisoners, loot chests, fight Imperial troops.
  4. Visit Bafsk if the Empire is constructing weapons there — talk, sabotage, or gather intel per keywords.
  5. Return to Hilda with mission reports; next objective becomes the Dreadnought fuel: Sunfire.
Dungeon

Kashuan Keep — Sunfire

  1. Travel to Kashuan Keep (desert / southern keep region).
  2. Often requires Egil’s Torch (or similar) to carry the Sunfire — retrieve the torch item from the keep or linked cave first if the flame cannot be held bare-handed.
  3. Navigate keep floors; open chests; fight fire-adjacent enemies (Ice magic helps if you have started Black Magic on Maria).
  4. Claim Sunfire from the eternal flame.
  5. This is the ignition source to destroy the Dreadnought’s engines.
Set-piece

Dreadnought infiltration

  1. Approach the landed / docked Dreadnought when the story opens the boarding path (often after Sunfire + rebel plan cutscene).
  2. Inside: long multi-floor airship dungeon. Random Imperial elites; heal often.
  3. Find the engine room / core. Use Sunfire to ignite and cripple the weapon.
  4. Boss fights may include Imperial officers or monsters mid-ship — open with focused physicals, Minwu/Maria on Cure.
  5. Escape sequence after sabotage. Watch cutscenes: the Empire’s weapon is broken but the war escalates.
Growth on the Dreadnought: Many mid-tier fights — a perfect place to spam your main weapon and Cure ranks. Do not flee everything.
Missable gear

Josef’s exit — strip him now

  • After the snow / cave sequences tied to the Dreadnought aftermath, Josef sacrifices himself holding a collapsing passage.
  • Before that cutscene fires, open the menu and remove every piece of equipment and valuable items from Josef.
  • If you miss this, his gear is gone for the run.
  • Gordon or another guest may rotate in afterward — equip the free slot immediately.
⚠ Spoiler — cost of war

Josef is the first major named ally to die permanently. FF II will do this again. The story is about what rebellion costs.
