The System

Combat & the ATB

Final Fantasy IV introduced the Active Time Battle system — the real-time-on-a-clock combat that defined the series for a decade. You don't build jobs here; you win by positioning, healing uptime, and each character's signature command.

01 · The Clock

The Active Time Battle system

  • Gauges fill in real time. Each unit has an ATB gauge that fills based on Speed/Agility; when it's full, that unit can act. Faster characters act more often.
  • Active vs Wait. In Active mode the clock keeps running while you choose; in Wait mode it pauses while menus/targeting are open. Use Wait (and a slower Battle Speed) for control on hard bosses.
  • Charged actions resolve late. Spells and some abilities have a cast time before they land — the target can move, die, or change state first. Account for the delay.
  • Status & elements. Bosses have elemental weaknesses and resistances; status (Slow, Haste, Reflect, Berserk, Blink) swings fights hard. Haste your damage dealers, Slow the boss.
02 · Position

Front row & back row

Each character sits in the front or back row. The back row halves physical damage dealt and taken — but bows and magic are unaffected by row. So:

  • Put fragile casters and archers (Rosa, Rydia, Tellah) in the back — they lose nothing and take half physical damage.
  • Keep your melee anchors (Paladin Cecil, Yang, Kain) in the front where their attacks hit full.
  • Edge and other hybrids depend on whether you're throwing/casting (row-agnostic) or swinging (front).

Signature commands

CommandOwnerWhat it does
JumpKain (Dragoon)Leap off-screen (untargetable), then crash down next turn for big damage. Doubles as a way to dodge a dangerous attack.
CoverCecil (Paladin)Physically intercept hits aimed at a low-HP ally. The Paladin's protective core.
DarknessCecil (Dark Knight)A stronger attack that costs Cecil his own HP — only before the Paladin shift.
SummonRydiaCall eidolons (Ifrit, Shiva, Ramuh, Titan, Leviathan, Bahamut, Asura…). Scales hard with levels.
TwincastPalom + PoromThe twins combine for a powerful joint spell (Pyroblast).
Throw / NinjutsuEdge (Ninja)Throw weapons/shuriken for huge single-target burst; Ninjutsu hits elemental weaknesses.
Kick / FocusYang (Monk)Kick hits all enemies; Focus charges then lands a heavy blow.
Aim / White MagicRosaReliable bow damage plus the party's healing and buffs (Cura, Protect, Haste, Pray).
BardsongEdward (Bard)Status/utility songs; weak in a straight fight.
There's no job customization to optimize — mastery here is using the right command at the right moment: Jump to dodge a telegraphed nuke, Cover to save a dying ally, Reflect to bounce a boss's magic, and never letting Rosa's healing lapse.
