Core systems at a glance
- The ATB system debuts here. Active Time Battle — each unit's gauge fills by Speed, then it acts. This is the template the whole series ran with.
- A fixed cast, not a job system. Each character has a set role (Dark Knight, Dragoon, White Mage, Summoner, Ninja…). The active party of five changes as the story dictates — members join and leave, sometimes taking their gear with them.
- Cecil's arc is mechanical. He starts as a self-damaging Dark Knight and becomes a sword-and-shield Paladin at Mount Ordeals — a permanent change to his abilities and stats.
- Front row / back row matters. The back row halves physical damage dealt and taken (bows and magic are unaffected) — put fragile casters behind the line.
- Optimization is light. It's gear + positioning + exploiting weaknesses, not builds. The Pixel Remaster is SNES-based — no Augments and no Lunar Ruins bonus dungeon.
