Core combat loop
Rebirth runs on the ATB (Active Time Battle) system. You attack in real time to build ATB segments, then spend them on abilities, spells, and items. The whole game pivots on two enemy states:
- Pressured — a vulnerable window created by hitting weaknesses, blocking specific attacks, or interrupting actions. Pressuring builds the stagger gauge faster.
- Staggered — when the stagger gauge fills, the enemy takes massively increased damage for a short window. This is when you unload Limit Breaks, big abilities, and stagger-extending Synergy Abilities.
The entire skill ceiling of Rebirth is: pressure efficiently, fill the stagger gauge, then maximize damage inside the stagger window. Everything else serves that loop.
Universal habits
- Always equip Assess and assess new enemies. It reveals weaknesses so you slot the right elements.
- Keep materia on reserve characters too — they gain AP during battle and level your orbs passively. Never leave slots empty.
- You can respec the Folio for free anytime, so experiment with Synergy unlocks freely.
The Materia system
Materia are Mako orbs slotted into weapons and armor. Linked slots (two connected slots) let a Support materia modify the materia it's paired with. Five types:
| Type | Color | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Magic | Green | Spells (Fire, Ice, Healing, etc.) |
| Support | Blue | Modifies a linked materia (Elemental, Magnify, Magic Efficiency) |
| Command | Yellow | Adds commands (Assess, Steal, ATB Boost) |
| Complete | Purple | Stat boosts (HP Up, MP Up, Level Boost) |
| Summon | Red | Summons (Titan, Phoenix, Bahamut, etc.) |
Best materia combinations
| Combo | Effect | When |
|---|---|---|
| Elemental + (Fire/Ice/Lightning/Wind) on weapon | Adds that element to your attacks | All game. Match to enemy weakness. |
| Elemental + element on armor | Resists / nullifies / absorbs that element | Boss fights with a known element |
| Magic Efficiency + Healing | Cuts MP cost of heals | All game, essential for sustain |
| HP Absorption + (damage spell / Enemy Skill) | Heal off your damage | Hard Mode (no items) |
| Magnify + Healing | Heals / buffs hit the whole party | Mid-to-late, party sustain |
| ATB Boost (Command) | Instantly grants ATB | Burst windows, opening a stagger |
| First Strike | Start the fight with ATB | Aggressive openers |
| Poison + Bio | Stacks Toxic Spores for attrition | Tough high-HP enemies |
Synergy Skills & Abilities
Rebirth's signature system and the biggest upgrade over Remake.
- Synergy Skills — free, no ATB cost. Two characters perform a quick combined action to build ATB, pressure, and set up. Spam these constantly; most also have a hidden perk (extending a buff, granting a free block).
- Synergy Abilities — cost ATB from both characters, unlocked in the Folio. These are the heavy hitters, and many grant powerful team buffs.
Synergy Abilities worth unlocking first
| Ability | Pair | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| United Refocus | Most pairs | Temporary 3-charge ATB gauge. Universally strong. |
| Relentless Rush | Cloud + Tifa | Prolongs Stagger. Save for when stagger breaks. |
| Sweet-and-Sour Salvo | Aerith + Barret | Prolongs Stagger, ranged. |
| Synchro Cyclone | Cloud + Tifa | Temporary unlimited MP. |
| Firework Blade | Cloud + Aerith | Raises Limit Break level. |
| Mystic Multiplication | Aerith + Yuffie | Aerith clones + unlimited MP for a spell dump. |
Character roles & builds
Seven playable members (plus story guests). Each has early (Ch 1–6), mid (Ch 7–10), and late/Hard (Ch 11+) build phases; weapons gain materia slots as you level them. Deep builds live on the Builds page — here are the roles.
Cloud — Balanced DPS / Frontline
Swaps between Operator (balanced) and Punisher (high damage, slow); Counterstance punishes attacks. Physical weapon + Elemental-linked element, ATB Boost for burst. Combo: Disorder → Prime Mode → Focused Thrust. The Rune Blade (high Magic ATK) turns him into a caster.
Tifa — Melee DPS / Stagger machine
Unbridled Strength upgrades her abilities (Whirling Uppercut → Omnistrike) and stacks raise her stagger-damage multiplier hard. Kaiser Knuckles (pure ATK), Lightning + Wind for aerial chains. The premier stagger-damage amplifier — build stagger with Cloud/Yuffie, then Tifa multiplies it.
Aerith — Caster / Healer / Control
Arcane Ward double-casts spells cast inside it. High Magic ATK staff, Magnify + Healing, Magic Efficiency, Prayer for MP-free heals. Drop Arcane Ward, stand in it, double-cast nukes. The backbone of sustain and burst magic.
Barret — Ranged DPS / Tank
Overcharge for burst, can hold aggro, Iron Defense is a top defensive Synergy. Gatling Gun + Fire/Earth for long-range chip and stagger maintenance. Good against flyers.
Red XIII — Vengeance Tank / DPS
Builds the Vengeance gauge by guarding, then enters an aggressive high-damage state; Wild Charge is his go-to Synergy. Guard to charge, then unleash.
Yuffie — Ranged/Melee Hybrid / Stagger
Elemental Ninjutsu — match her thrown element to the enemy weakness to pressure fast; Doppelganger clone. Fire + Ice linked with Elemental, ATB Assist, First Strike. One of the fastest stagger-builders in the game.
Cait Sith — Summoner / Support (situational)
Summons Moogle, then spams Roll o' the Dice / Fortune Telling to trigger ATB Assist for the team. First Strike, ATB Boost, ATB Stagger to deploy fast. A team enabler more than a carry.
Party compositions
Active party is three; swap freely in menus, and KO'd members can be subbed. On a first playthrough Cloud must be one of those three; in New Game+ you can run any trio you want. Build around shared mechanics, not isolated damage. More on the Party Setup page.
| Party | Why |
|---|---|
| Cloud + Tifa + Aerith | The default. Stagger (Cloud) → amplify (Tifa) → burst magic + heals (Aerith). Strong all game. |
| Cloud + Barret + Red XIII | Fire-heavy and tankier. Good for sustained, defensive fights. |
| Cloud + Tifa + Yuffie | Maximum stagger speed for tough single bosses. |
| Anyone + Aerith | Whenever you need a hard caster/healer and Arcane Ward double-casts. |
Game-phase progression
- Early (Ch 1–6): equip a focused materia set — Fire/Ice/Lightning/Wind for coverage, one Healing, Assess, an HP Up. Support materia (Elemental, ATB-gain, stagger boosters) quietly carry these chapters.
- Mid (Ch 7–10): weapons have more slots; commit to roles. Build Tifa's Unbridled Strength loop, Aerith's Arcane Ward kit, Yuffie's elemental stagger. Start farming Chadley's Intel for Enemy Skill and dual-element materia.
- Late (Ch 11+): elemental Magnify, maxed Elemental, and HP Absorption come online. Optimize each lead for their stagger role and prep the Hard Mode loadouts below.
Boss strategy
The universal method: assess for weakness → pressure with that element/mechanic → break stagger → extend it with a Synergy Ability → unload Limit Breaks at peak stagger. Avoid over-aggression; many bosses punish greed. Per-boss intel on the Bosses page.
Shielded / multi-phase bosses (e.g. Sephiroth fights)
- Phase 1: precise-block to pressure, then hit with pressure abilities. Reach the health gate.
- Barrier / Aegis phase: hit with Synergy Abilities (especially limit-level boosters like Firework Blade). Keep Prayer/heals up to stay above big-attack thresholds.
- Drop the shield, re-stagger, unleash Level 2 Limit Breaks. Double-cast Aerith spells from Arcane Ward to accelerate.
Endgame & Hard Mode
Hard Mode disables items and MP recovery from rest, so sustain must come from your build:
- Magic Efficiency + Healing to stretch MP.
- HP Absorption + Enemy Skill (or a damage spell) to heal off damage.
- Maxed Magnify and Elemental shine here.
Key endgame gear
- Gotterdammerung and similar top accessories require the Brutal Challenge Rulers of the Outer World in Chadley's Combat Simulator (after beating Gilgamesh). Use Gi Warrior's Charm or Chocoking's Cape as stand-ins until then.
- Cloud's Hard Mode setup centers the Igneous Saber at Weapon Level 7 + Cetran Bracer for 8 materia slots.
Gilgamesh — the hardest optional boss
- Collect all Protorelics from all six regions (Grasslands, Junon, Corel, Gongaga, Cosmo Canyon, Nibel) — triggers the Phenomenon Intel to Gilgamesh Island.
- Obtain all Summon Materia from the Combat Simulator (Titan, Phoenix, Alexander, Kujata, Bahamut Arisen, Odin).
Secrets & priorities
- Reserve-slot AP farming: materia on benched characters still levels. Keep every slot filled across the whole roster.
- Free Folio respec: never feel locked into Synergy unlocks; rebuild for each boss.
- Queen's Blood is worth real time — strong rewards and genuinely deep. Build a deck early (see the Queen's Blood page).
- Chadley gates your power. World/Battle Intel unlocks the best materia and summons. Don't skip regions.
- Save stagger-extenders. Relentless Rush / Sweet-and-Sour Salvo / United Refocus are wasted outside the stagger window. Hold them.
- Match weapon stat split to playstyle. ATK vs M.ATK on a weapon (Kaiser Knuckles vs Rune Blade) defines physical vs caster before you slot a single materia.
