Missables & Tips

The freeform game still has a few things to watch — gear that walks out with a departing ally, the legendary Ultima quest, and the habits that make activity-based growth sing.

Missables & the Ultima quest

  • Strip gear from departing guests. The fourth-seat allies come and go — un-equip anything valuable before a guest leaves the party, or it leaves with them.
  • The Ultima quest. FF II is the origin of the iconic spell. A late side-thread sends you after the Ultima tome — pursue it for the lore and the legendary payoff. (Set expectations by your version; Ultima's raw power has varied a lot across releases, so lean on it as a capstone, not your only nuke.)
  • Talk to everyone, every town. Because progress is keyword-gated, the most "missable" thing is a conversation — ask your current keywords around before moving on.
  • Blood Sword & rare gear. Some of the strongest weapons are tucked in optional rooms/chests — sweep dungeons fully.
Pixel Remaster noteThe PR does not include the Soul of Rebirth bonus campaign (that was a Dawn of Souls/later-version extra). The PR is the rebalanced Famicom game — the main story is the whole package here.

Durable growth tips

  • One weapon type per character. Spreading attacks across sword/axe/bow keeps every skill low — commit to one and it levels fast.
  • Commit to a small spell set. Spells level slowly; a focused handful (Cure, one or two nukes, Berserk, Haste, Blink) outperforms a bloated spellbook.
  • Berserk + Haste on your physical carry is the game's best damage combo — level those two spells early.
  • Let the trio take hits, then heal. In the PR you grow HP from damage taken over a fight even if you heal back up — so play normally and HP rises on its own.
  • Mages go light & back row. Low equipment weight keeps Agility/evasion up; the back row halves physical damage and bows/spells don't care about row.
  • Invest in the permanent trio. Don't over-grind temporary guests — Firion, Maria and Guy are your endgame.
