The Keyword system
- Memorize keywords. In conversations you can learn and remember key terms (and receive key items).
- Ask & Show. Use the Ask command to bring up a learned keyword with an NPC, or Show a key item — this unlocks new dialogue, directions, and story flags. Progress often hinges on asking the right person the right word.
- Talk to everyone. Because advancement is conversation-gated, sweep each town and ask your current keywords around — the path forward is usually a line of dialogue, not a locked door.
Progression
The campaign follows the rebellion against the Palamecian Empire: liberating towns, securing airship and Dragoon allies, raiding Imperial superweapons, and ultimately storming the seat of power. It's more linear and story-driven than the job games — your job is to keep the permanent trio growing along the way and answer each region's threats.
Major bosses
- The Dreadnought & Imperial set-pieces — the Empire's superweapons gate big story beats; come with leveled weapon skills and a healer.
- Behemoths & heavy hitters — FF II's tough random/optional foes hit hard; Berserk + Haste on your physical attacker and steady Cure uptime carry these.
- The Emperor — the final boss. By now you want high weapon/spell proficiency, strong HP from a game of taking hits, and buffs (Berserk, Haste, Protect/Blink). Status and elemental coverage close it out.
⚠ Spoiler — the story & ending
Four youths flee the Palamecian Empire's invasion of Fynn; one, Leon, is separated and lost. The survivors — Firion, Maria and Guy — join the rebellion under Princess Hilda and strike at the Empire's war machine across a string of missions.
This is the first Final Fantasy where named allies permanently die: Josef is crushed saving the party, the white mage Minwu gives his life to break the seal on Ultima, and the dragoon Ricard Highwind falls fighting the Emperor. The cost of the war is the whole point.
Leon resurfaces as the Empire's Dark Knight general — and he's Maria's brother. The party slays the Emperor, but he claws his way back from Hell more powerful than before, seizing the demon fortress Pandaemonium. Leon turns on the Empire and joins the final assault, and the reborn Emperor is destroyed for good. (This Pixel Remaster does not include the Soul of Rebirth epilogue.)
