The Onion Knight
The Onion Knight is your starting job and, for most of the game, the weakest class — its stats and gear lag badly through the mid-game. But it has the highest growth ceiling in the game: equipped with the full Onion gear set and pushed to very high levels, it surpasses even the Ninja and Sage, with near-unbreakable defense and top-tier attack.
The catch is the Onion equipment is extremely rare (tied to very low-rate drops from the toughest optional encounters). It's a dedicated grind for bragging rights and superboss-tier power — not something a normal playthrough needs. If you're not chasing it, just retire the Onion Knight early.
Missables & prep
- The no-save finale. The biggest "gotcha" in FF III — the Crystal Tower → Eureka → World of Darkness → Cloud of Darkness run has no save point. Over-level, finalize jobs/gear, and stock Elixirs and Phoenix Downs before you enter.
- Clear Eureka first. Its legendary weapons (Excalibur, Ragnarok, Masamune) and top spells dramatically upgrade your finale party — grab them before the World of Darkness.
- Mini / Toad caves. A few dungeons require you to shrink (Mini) or become a Toad to enter — keep the spells handy and avoid extra fights while transformed.
- Don't burn CP flipping jobs. Retrain with purpose; the PR's job-level boost helps, but Capacity Points are still a resource.
Durable tips
- Keep casters in caster jobs. Stats grow with the job you live in, so a long-term mage shouldn't moonlight as a Warrior.
- Always field healing. White Mage early, Devout/Sage late — never run a full party of attackers into a dungeon.
- Read the dungeon, then retrain. FF III rewards picking jobs for what's ahead (Dragoons before Garuda, a Scholar before Hein).
- Bows and magic ignore row — put Rangers and mages in the back to take half physical damage for free.
- Dark Knight for anything that clones. Souleater clears duplicating enemies before they snowball.
- Save often outside the finale — and once more right before committing to the Crystal Tower.
