Durable strategy
- Speed is king. When you can choose a stat to stack or a class to grind for growth, Speed compounds harder than anything else.
- Win the turn economy with Haste/Quick/Slow before trying to out-damage a tough fight.
- Abuse height and facing every turn: attack from behind/side, hold high ground, force the enemy to climb.
- Manage Faith deliberately. High Faith = strong casting but fragile to magick; low Faith = magick-resistant tanks who can't cast. Build each unit to one side.
- Grind prerequisite jobs on purpose — to unlock elite classes and to harvest cross-class abilities for the secondary/reaction/support/movement slots.
- Protect downed units. Revive or retreat before the Crystal countdown ends, especially for JP-invested generics.
- Use Zodiac Compatibility now that it's visible: a favorable matchup is a free ~25% swing on damage, healing, and accuracy.
- Use New Game+ to push harder builds and rarer class setups on a second run with levels and items intact.
Difficulty spikes to prep for
A handful of story fights are famous for ending unprepared runs. Know them before you arrive — some lock you in with no chance to re-shop or re-build.
| Battle | Why it's a wall | Prep |
|---|---|---|
| Dorter Trade City (Ch.1) | The first real test — enemy archers and a Black Mage punish a clumped, low-gear party. | Spread out, take the high ground, and bring a healer; don't melee into the mage's line. |
| Wiegraf duel (Riovanes Castle) | Ramza fights alone, 1-on-1, with no party and no shopping in between — a glass-cannon or pure-mage Ramza simply loses. | Build Ramza self-sufficient before entering: solid HP/armor, a reliable attack, and Auto-Potion or a self-heal. Stock Potions/Hi-Potions. |
| Velius (immediately after) | The duel flows straight into a Lucavi fight where Ramza starts surrounded by your party — but the demon hits the whole field hard. | The same Ramza build carries in; focus the boss, keep units spread to limit AoE, and revive fast. |
| Riovanes rooftop | The assassins (Celia/Lettie) and the hostage situation can snowball with charm/status. | Status defense and ranged answers; protect the vulnerable NPC and don't overextend. |
What it's all about
⚠ Spoiler — the story & ending
Set during the War of the Lions, two boyhood friends of opposite station diverge: the highborn Ramza Beoulve and the commoner Delita Heiral. After a tragedy born of class contempt, Delita resolves to seize power on his own terms, while Ramza walks away from his noble name.
Beneath the civil war runs a darker secret: the Church of Glabados and the Zodiac Stones, which let their bearers transform into Lucavi demons scheming to resurrect their lord. Ramza spends the game uncovering and fighting this hidden evil — alone, branded a heretic.
Delita manipulates every faction, marries into royalty, and becomes king, ending the war — but at the cost of everyone he used (the famous final line: “Ramza… what did you get?”). Ramza saves the kingdom from the Lucavi but is erased from official history; the truth survives only as the suppressed Durai Papers, the in-universe document the whole game is framed as.
