Relics & Build Archetypes

Relics are where FF VI's real character building happens. Two accessory slots, the right two relics, and a min-maxed stat turn any brother into a one-turn boss-deleter. Here are the pieces and the proven combos.

Key relics & combos

RelicEffect
Soul of Thamasa (Gem Box)Dualcast — cast two spells per turn. The single best magic relic.
Celestriad (Economizer)All spells cost 1 MP. With dualcast, spam Ultima forever.
Genji GloveEquip and attack with two weapons.
Master's Scroll (Offering)Attack four times (reduced per-hit). Genji Glove + Master's Scroll = up to 8 hits.
Hero Ring (Hero's Ring)+25% physical and magic damage.
Moogle CharmNo random encounters. Worn by Mog; build around exploring freely.
RibbonImmunity to nearly all status effects. Near-mandatory for hard fights.
GauntletTwo-hand a single weapon for more damage (worse than Genji+Scroll, but simple).
Merit AwardLets a character equip gear they normally can't — opens broken loadouts.
Exp. EggDoubles EXP — pair with your min-max grind.
The two build pillars: magic carries want Soul of Thamasa + Celestriad (double 1-MP Ultima every turn); physical carries want Genji Glove + Master's Scroll with two strong weapons (or Fixed Dice on Setzer/Locke).

Build archetypes

  1. Dualcast Ultima nuker — maxed-Magic caster (Terra / Celes / Relm) + Soul of Thamasa + Celestriad. Two 1-MP Ultimas every turn. Pre-cast Quick for a burst of four.
  2. 8-hit physicalGenji Glove + Master's Scroll + two top weapons. On Setzer/Locke, use Fixed Dice to ignore defense entirely.
  3. Sabin engine — Blitz Bum Rush needs no MP and ignores most defense; pair with Hero Ring and just win the early/mid game.
  4. Support fortress — Strago Mighty Guard (party Protect/Shell/Float buffs), Golem/Phantom summons, Reflect rings to bounce magic.
  5. Runic wall — Celes holds Runic against magic-heavy bosses, eating their nukes and refueling MP while the rest of the party kills.
