Final Fantasy XVI

Valisthea · The Dominants & their Eikons

A dark, character-action Final Fantasy built by the team behind Devil May Cry's combat. There are no jobs and no party menu — you play Clive Rosfield, and the depth is in the stagger system and the Eikonic abilities you mix across eight summons. This guide covers the combat, the full Eikon roster, the Mastery build system, every fight, and the endgame.

Overview & core systems

  • It's an action game. Real-time combat — melee combos, ranged Magic Bursts, a dodge with a slow-mo Precision Dodge window. No ATB, no turn queue.
  • Stagger is the whole game. Every notable enemy has a Will gauge. Chip it down to stagger them, then dump your hardest-hitting abilities while a damage multiplier is live. Building stagger and exploiting it are two different jobs.
  • Eikons are your "classes." You collect eight Eikons, each granting a Feat (a signature movement/attack) and two ability slots. You equip three Eikons at once and swap between them mid-combo.
  • Mastery is the build system. Spend AP to upgrade abilities; Master one and you can equip it under any Eikon. Respec is free and unlimited — experiment constantly.
  • One character, one dog. No party management beyond Torgal, the wolf you command for gap-closes, follow-ups and a heal. Allies fight on their own.
  • Hard to miss things. The world reopens; there's a New Game+ (Final Fantasy Mode) and a stage replay. The hunt is for optional bosses and gear, not fragile missables.
Difficulty up frontYou pick a feel, not a number. Action Focused is the standard mode; Story Focused equips "Timely" accessory rings that auto-dodge, auto-combo or auto-heal so you can lean into the story. After you finish once, Final Fantasy Mode unlocks as a tougher, remixed New Game+. You can pull a Timely ring at any time, so the curve is yours to set.
