Bosses & the Hunt Board

XVI's fights come in two shapes: grounded action bosses you beat with the stagger loop, and the colossal Eikon-vs-Eikon set-pieces that change the rules for spectacle. Then there's the hunt board — the optional roster of Notorious Marks that gate the best crafting materials. Story-specific tactics are kept behind spoilers.

01 · Two kinds of fight

Action bosses vs Eikon battles

  • Action bosses — the standard duel. Same rules as everything else: drain the Will gauge, hold your dumps for the stagger, Precision Dodge the telegraphs. Most named human and beast bosses are this.
  • Eikon battles — the kaiju set-pieces where Clive's Eikon clashes with another. Controls simplify (often a bigger, slower moveset, on-rails segments and cinematic clashes); these are paced for awe, not difficulty. React to the wind-ups, hit the clash prompts, and you're fine.
  • Hybrid stretches — some boss gauntlets flip between phases of normal action combat and Eikon-scale spectacle in one encounter. Keep potions topped between phases — checkpoints are generous but the action phases still kill.
02 · Universal tactics

How to beat any boss

  1. Learn the telegraph, then dodge late. Bosses have readable wind-ups. A late Precision Dodge gives invulnerability and a slow-mo counter window — far better than dodging early.
  2. Break before you dump. Spend Will-builders (Gouge, turrets) until the stagger pops, then unload Gigaflare / Diamond Dust / Zantetsuken / Limit Break while the multiplier climbs.
  3. Bank a long cooldown for the break. Don't fire your biggest ability at full HP — a held Earthen Fury or max-stack Zantetsuken into a stagger is worth several loose casts.
  4. Ration potions. You can't out-heal a fight you don't understand. Use Torgal's Heal first, potions second, and respec to a Timely Healing ring if a fight is purely a survival check.
  5. Re-spec for the matchup. Fliers want ranged Feats (Blind Justice, Wings of Light); swarms want AoE (Scarlet Cyclone, Mesmerize). Resetting AP is free — tailor the loadout.
03 · The campaign gauntlet

The Dominant fights

The spine of the story is a series of duels against the other Eikons' Dominants. Naming them spoils the plot, so the specifics live below — open only if you've played past them or don't mind knowing.

⚠ Spoiler — the major Eikon/Dominant battles & the finale

Benedikta / Garuda — an aerial, evasive fighter. Stay close, punish her dashes with Precision Counters, and the Eikon phase is a clash-prompt spectacle.

Hugo Kupka / Titan — a heavy bruiser with massive earth telegraphs and one of the game's longest Eikon set-pieces; patient dodging through the rock barrages, then big dumps in the openings.

Dion / Bahamut — light-beam barrages and a flight-heavy Eikon phase; weave through the bullet-hell with ranged answers.

Barnabas / Odin — a precise swordsman who rewards reading his stance; his fight is a duel of timing.

The finale — Ultima. A multi-stage climax that hands you sweeping Ultima powers for its duration. It's long; keep potions stocked and treat each phase as its own stagger loop.

None of these gate the optional content — you can return to the world and the hunt board afterward via the chronicle/replay.

04 · The Hunt Board

Notorious Marks

Once the Hideaway opens, the Hunt Board posts Notorious Marks — powerful optional monsters scattered across Valisthea. It's the main source of rare crafting materials for the best gear and ability augments.

  • Ranks D → S. Marks are graded by danger. New ones post as the story advances and as you clear lower ranks; the board tracks how many remain.
  • Rewards are materials, gil and renown. High-rank marks drop the rare smithing components (and sometimes ability augments) you can't get elsewhere — the gate on top-tier weapons.
  • S-rank is the real test. The handful of S-rank marks are tuned like superbosses; come with a finished stagger-dump loadout and matchup-appropriate Feats.
Selected markRankNote
AtlasSA towering iron colossus — one of the toughest hunts; huge slow telegraphs to dodge, then dump.
SvarogSA flying dragon — bring ranged Feats (Blind Justice / Wings of Light).
GorgimeraAA three-headed chimera with mixed elemental attacks; a good mid-game gear check.
PandemoniumSA late, aggressive mark gating premium materials.
The table is a sample, not the full board — ranks and the complete mark list are best cross-checked against the FF Wiki, which carries every mark, its location and exact drops. Clear the board for the materials you'll need for the endgame weapons on the Progression page.
