The System

Combat, Materia & Weapons

Remake's combat is real-time action on top of an ATB economy, and it all funnels into one thing: pressure an enemy, fill the stagger gauge, and unload in the window. Materia and the weapon trees are how you stack the deck.

ATB, Tactical Mode & Stagger

  • Attack to earn ATB. Basic attacks and blocking fill ATB segments; you spend them on Abilities, Magic, and Items. You're always building toward a spend.
  • Tactical Mode. Opening the command menu slows time to a crawl — use it constantly to queue spells/abilities precisely without flailing in real time.
  • Pressure → Stagger. Hitting weaknesses, interrupting casts, parrying, or meeting an enemy's specific condition Pressures it (the stagger gauge fills faster); a full gauge Staggers it for a window of greatly increased damage. Save Abilities, Limit Breaks and ATB Boost for that window.
  • Assess everything. The Assess Materia reveals weaknesses and stagger/pressure conditions — the single most important habit, exactly as in Rebirth.
  • Switch characters. Control whoever the moment needs; the AI builds ATB slowly, so hop between party members to keep everyone's bars moving.
02 · Materia

The Materia system

Materia slot into weapons and armor; linked slots let a Support Materia modify the Materia paired with it. Five types: Magic (green), Support (blue), Command (yellow), Complete (purple), Summon (red).

Coverage rule: spread Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind across the party, keep at least one Healing + Revival, and always run Assess. Level Materia by using it — spells and Summons grow with AP.

Weapons & the SP upgrade trees

  • Each character has several weapons, and each weapon has a unique Weapon Ability. Use a weapon's ability enough to raise its Proficiency to 100% and you learn it permanently — then you can use that ability with any of that character's weapons.
  • Weapons have SP upgrade trees. Spend Skill Points (earned by leveling) on cores that boost stats, add Materia slots, and grant passives. You can reset SP freely, so re-spec per fight.
  • No weapon is obsolete. Because weapons scale with your level and SP, an early weapon stays viable — pick by the stat split and ability you want (physical vs magic), not by "newest."
Different from RebirthRemake uses this per-weapon ability + SP tree system; Rebirth replaced it with the shared Folio skill tree and weapon-level slots. If you're coming from Rebirth, learn abilities by using each weapon here, and don't be afraid to reset SP.
