The Fundamentals

Combat & Warp-Strikes

XV's combat is fast and forgiving on the surface — hold one button to attack, one to defend — but underneath is a positioning game built on warping and an MP economy that punishes mashing. Learn to warp, phase and manage MP, and you'll out-tempo anything in Lucis.

Your kit

ActionDefault (PS4)What it does
AttackHold ◯Auto-combos with the equipped weapon. The attack changes with your movement — standing, running, after a dodge, or in the air all produce different strings.
Defend / PhaseHold L1While held and you have MP, Noctis phases through incoming attacks (spending MP per dodge). The core defensive tool.
ParryAttack + Defend on the promptWhen an enemy winds up a parryable blow, a prompt flashes — answer it to parry and open a heavy counter (often a brother link-strike).
Warp-StrikeHold/press Triangle on a targetTeleport onto an enemy for a hit whose damage scales with distance. Costs MP. Your opener, gap-closer and finisher.
Point-WarpTriangle on a warp pointWarp to a ledge/structure to hang safely — recovers MP and HP and breaks line of sight. How you reset a fight.
Switch weaponD-padSwap among your four equipped weapons mid-combo to cover air, ground, ranged and armor-break needs.
TechniqueL1 + face buttonOrder a brother's Technique (see The Brotherhood). Builds on its own Tech bar.
ItemR1 + face buttonQuick-use potions, elixirs and spells. There is no heal spell by default — items keep you alive.
02 · The economy

MP, Stasis & the rhythm of a fight

Almost everything good costs MP: warping, phasing, Armiger. Your skill ceiling is really MP management.

  • Stasis is the punishment. Burn your MP bar to zero and you enter Stasis — no warping, no phasing, no Armiger — until you recover. Don't phase-spam your way into being defenceless.
  • Point-warp to refuel. Warping to a warp point steadily restores MP (and HP) while you hang there, hidden. The loop is: warp-strike in, fight, retreat to a perch when MP runs low, drop back in.
  • "Danger" instead of instant death. At 0 HP you enter Danger — a shrinking max-HP downed state where a brother or a Phoenix Down can revive you. Heal before the timer runs out or it's game over.
  • Warp-strike for damage and safety. A long-range warp-strike hits hardest and repositions you out of a telegraph at the same time. Distance = damage.
The core loop: warp-strike to open → combo and switch weapons for weak points → phase the big hits → when MP dips, point-warp to a perch to refuel → drop back in. Manage that and most fights are a formality.
03 · Weak points & weapons

Hit the right thing with the right weapon

  • Different weapons, different jobs. Greatswords and the warp-strike break armor and stagger; daggers shred fast; polearms reach and hit air; firearms and machinery poke from range. Equipping a spread of four covers every situation — details on Weapons & Magic.
  • Weaknesses are real. Use Libra / Analyze (and Prompto's Analyze) to read an enemy's elemental and weapon weaknesses, then load the right element via Ignis's Enhancement or an elemancy spell.
  • Blindside & link-strikes. Attacking from behind an enemy triggers a blindside bonus and can chain a brother into a cooperative link-strike for big damage.
04 · Power moves

Armiger, Armiger Unleashed & Wait Mode

  • Armiger. A gauge fills as you fight and land Royal Arms hits; unleash it to call the 13 phantom blades of the Lucii and enter a high-damage, hard-to-stagger state for its duration. Save it for tough enemies or a clutch moment.
  • Armiger Unleashed (Royal/Windows Edition) — a special free-form Armiger combo you can trigger when the gauge is full, layering even more burst on top.
  • Wait Mode. An optional tactical layer: stop moving and time slows, letting you survey the field and tag weak points (it trades a small damage penalty for breathing room). Tune it — or turn it off — in the settings to match how active you want combat to feel.
Two free habitsOpen every engagement with a long-range warp-strike, and treat warp points as your "reload." New players die in Stasis with a full party watching — veterans never let the MP bar bottom out without a perch in mind.
