Walkthrough · Chapter 5 of 6 · Self-contained

Dragons, Shields & Side Gods

Everything optional that makes Kefka’s Tower a victory lap: Eight Dragons, Crusader, Paladin Shield, Fanatics’ Tower, Doom Gaze, and Colosseum wagers.

Chapter goals

Chapter 5 checklist

  • Espers equipped for intended stat growth before heavy grinding
  • All Eight Legendary Dragons defeated → Crusader Magicite
  • Cursed Shield worn for ~255 battles → Paladin’s Shield
  • Fanatics’ Tower cleared (magic-only floors; Soul of Thamasa path)
  • Doom Gaze finished across airship encounters → Bahamut
  • Colosseum: Fixed Dice / key relic wagers as desired
  • Major Magicite online (Phoenix, Ragnarok choice resolved, Crusader, Bahamut, etc.)
  • At least one Dualcast Ultima plan; one Genji+Master’s Scroll physical
  • Kefka’s Tower three-party split (Ch.6)
Before the hunt

Power prep (do this first)

  1. Assign Magicite by role: casters level with +Magic espers; physicals with +Str / +Spd as available. AP still teaches spells to everyone equipped.
  2. Learn priority spells: Cure/Cura/Curaga line, Raise/Arise, Haste/Hastega, Slow/Stop, Osmose, Rasp, Ultima (Ragnarok Esper path), Flare, Holy, Merton/Meltdown care (friendly fire), Quick if available.
  3. Steal leftovers: take Locke through bosses and rare encounter sets you skipped in Balance.
  4. Moogle Charm (Mog): zero-encounter exploration for chest routing in long towers — unequip when you want AP.
  5. Stock Phoenix Downs, Tents, and status cures. Ribbons on fragile mages.
Pixel Remaster note: Eight Dragons still award Crusader. GBA-only Dragons’ Den / Soul Shrine content is not the PR endgame loop — focus dragons + tower + Colosseum.
Optional superbosses

The Eight Legendary Dragons

Defeat all eight in the World of Ruin (one waits inside Kefka’s Tower — you can leave him for the finale climb or clear the other seven first). Each is element- or gimmick-coded. Use absorb/null gear, Runic Celes, and Reflect wisely.

  • Red Dragon — Phoenix Cave area / fire-aspected. Ice and water pressure; fire absorb if you have it.
  • Blue Dragon — Ancient Castle / related underwater or ruin path (PR maps to the ancient ruins access). Lightning / water kit; bring appropriate nulls.
  • Green Dragon — near the Veldt / forested ruin approaches (wind / poison tendencies depending on version naming). Status protection helps.
  • Earth Dragon — Opera House roof / reopened opera area in Ruin (quake and earth). Float nullifies quake if available.
  • Gold Dragon — Kefka’s Tower interior (lightning). Often saved for Ch.6 routing; note it on your tower map.
  • Skull Dragon — yeti / Narshe-adjacent or cave routes tied to Umaro’s region in many guides; undead tricks (Phoenix, Holy, Peeling with Fire).
  • Storm Dragon — Mt. Zozo peak / windy heights after Cyan’s dungeon. Wind element; Aero-line and physicals.
  • Ice Dragon — Narshe cliffs / snowfields. Fire spells and Ice absorb shields.
  1. Mark each kill. When the eighth falls, you receive Crusader Magicite — devastating multi-target holy/dark nuke teach and summon.
  2. Do not sell unique dragon drops; several feed Colosseum chains or ultimate kits.
Exact pins move slightly by map memory — if a dragon is missing, revisit: Opera House, Mt. Zozo summit, Phoenix Cave branch, Ancient Castle, Narshe exterior, Veldt forest edge, and Kefka’s Tower. In-game bestiary / PR tracking helps.
Best shield

Cursed Shield → Paladin’s Shield

  1. Obtain the Cursed Shield (Narshe / related WoR treasure path — check the weapon hall and cave branches if you skipped chests).
  2. Equip it on someone you will keep in the active party. It inflicts multiple status ailments while cursed — counter with a Ribbon (or equivalent status immunity) so the character can still function.
  3. Win approximately 255 battles with it equipped. Random encounters count; use dense areas (Veldt, tower floors without Moogle Charm).
  4. When the curse lifts, it becomes the Paladin’s Shield — elite defenses and elemental absorb/null properties. Best-in-slot for almost any physical or hybrid.
Efficiency: Start the curse counter early in Ch.4 while recruiting so it finishes during dragon hunting, not the night before Kefka.
Magic dungeon

Fanatics’ Tower (Cultists’ Tower)

  1. Locate the tall magic-only tower on the WoR map (cult of Kefka). Encounters force Magic — Fight is sealed.
  2. Bring mages with Osmose (MP battery), strong single-target spells, and healing. Strago Lores and Espers shine.
  3. Climb fully; open chests. Boss at the peak (holy/magic pressure).
  4. Rewards include high-end mage gear and routes toward Soul of Thamasa (allows dual-spell casting when paired correctly with other relics — cornerstone of Dualcast Ultima builds). Verify the exact chest/NPC for your PR version if a reward seems missing.
  • Unequip useless physical weapons for this climb; max Magic and MP.
  • Reflect strategies can soft-lock you if you bounce your own heals — know when to Dispel.
Sky boss

Doom Gaze & Bahamut

  1. Fly the Falcon until a random airship encounter triggers Doom Gaze.
  2. It flees when damaged enough in a single fight. Track remaining HP mentally or via bestiary — keep attacking across multiple encounters until it dies for good.
  3. Victory yields Bahamut Magicite (and related AP/spells). Essential for completeness.
Tip: Save before airship grinding if you are mid-Cursed-Shield count and do not want to lose a long session to a wipe.
Arena

Dragon’s Neck Colosseum

  1. Bet specific items to fight set 1v1 battles for better items. The AI controls your fighter — equip for autonomy (auto-haste, high damage, status immune).
  2. Fixed Dice (Setzer’s ultimate-style weapon path) and other build pieces often live on wager chains. Never bet irreplaceable uniques without a guide open for that exact trade.
  3. Win, re-equip, and bank prizes. Some wagers are traps that return inferior goods.
Build lock-in

Relic endgame kit (bring into Ch.6)

  • Soul of Thamasa + Celestriad — dualcast Ultima / cheap dual magic god mode on your best mage.
  • Genji Glove + Master’s Scroll — 8-hit physical storm (pair with Offering-style setups and strong weapons; Fixed Dice loves this).
  • Ribbon on anyone without inherent status immunity.
  • Safety Bit / growth eggs / sprint shoes as available for utility slots.
  • Runic ready on Celes for magic-heavy tower bosses.
  • Mighty Guard (Strago Lore) for party defenses before hard pulls.

When dragons, shield, tower, and Bahamut are done — or when you simply feel overbuilt — open Chapter 6 for the three-party climb and master checklist.
