Chapter 3 checklist
Comfort level: Marsh ~Lv 10–12; Earth Cavern / Lich ~Lv 15–18.
- Clear Marsh Cave; obtain the Crown
- Return crown to Western Keep; defeat Astos; obtain Crystal Eye + Mystic Key
- Return Eye to Matoya; get Jolt Tonic; wake Elf Prince; receive TNT / nitro path item
- Full Mystic Key chest tour (list below)
- Dwarves: Nerrick blasts the canal open
- Melmond visit; enter Earth Cavern; light Earth Crystal; defeat Lich
- Receive Canoe from Crescent Lake sages / sage path after Earth
- Mount Gulg / Marilith (Ch.4)
Marsh Cave — full steps
- From Elfheim region, sail/walk to the Marsh Cave entrance on the overworld (swampy peninsula area).
- Bring many Potions, Antidotes, and a Tent for the entrance. Undead and status pests live here.
- Multi-floor cave: explore systematically. Open every chest — weapons, gil, spell tomes sometimes.
- Undead: use Dia/Harm/Fire if available. Save Lv2+ charges for tough packs.
- Bottom / key room: claim the Crown.
- Warp/Teleport out if you have it; otherwise walk. Heal fully outside.
Astos → Matoya → Elf Prince
- Return to the Western Keep with the Crown. Present it to the false king.
- Boss: Astos. He hits with strong magic/physical hybrid pressure. Dispel darkness if blinded; focus fire; Cure every turn he spikes someone.
- Rewards: Crystal Eye and Mystic Key (names can vary slightly by localization — PR uses clear key-item labels).
- Sail/walk to Matoya; return the Eye. She brews Jolt Tonic (or equivalent wake potion).
- Back to Elfheim castle: wake the prince. He grants the means to obtain TNT for the dwarves (or gives it via the story handoff — follow the prince/NPC instructions exactly).
Mystic Key tour — every major door
With the Mystic Key, revisit locked rooms. This is one of the biggest permanent power spikes in the game.
| Location | What you’re opening | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cornelia Castle | Locked treasure rooms | Gil, gear, early treasures |
| Temple of Fiends (present) | Side rooms locked in Ch.1 | Best early weapons/armor missables |
| Elfheim Castle | Locked vaults | Elven treasures |
| Western Keep | Astos’s remaining chests | Clean out the keep |
| Marsh Cave | Any remaining locked cells | Complete the dungeon |
Do this tour before Earth Cavern. The gear difference vs Lich is real. Mark every town with a key icon on your mental map.
Melmond & the Earth Cavern
- With canal TNT ready, visit the Dwarf Cave. Give Nerrick the explosives; he destroys the canal rocks. Your ship can now reach new seas.
- Sail to the decaying town of Melmond. NPCs describe the earth rotting — the Earth Crystal is dark.
- Buy remaining supplies. Rest.
- Enter the Earth Cavern (Earth Cave) nearby. Long vertical dungeon with earth elementals, undead, and tight corridors.
- Loot all chests floor by floor. Note vampire / undead rooms — Dia and Fire shine.
- Optional mid-boss encounters (vampires etc.) before the Fiend: treat them like mini-Fiends with Protect/Focus fire.
- Crystal room: confront Lich.
Boss: Lich (Earth)
- Element: Earth Fiend / undead nature.
- Weak to: Fire first; Dia/Harm/Holy lines also punish undead.
- Open: Haste on your best physical if you have it; Protect on the party; then Fire every Black Mage turn.
- Heal: One character dedicated to Cure/Cura when multi-target spells land.
- After victory: Earth Crystal reignites. World state updates; sages at Crescent Lake become the next story beacon.
Canoe & next chapter hook
- Travel to Crescent Lake (circle of sages). They explain the four Fiends and grant the Canoe for river travel.
- Canoe lets you travel rivers to Mount Gulg (fire) — Chapter 4.
- Restock Fire-resistant prep: Ice magic for Marilith, plenty of hi-potions.
| Key item | Status end of Ch.3 |
